My New Year’s Resolutions

January 1, 2011 by Laura

Happy New Year!! We had a blast at the Thunder game last night! Hope you all had a good night as well. Have you made your resolutions for 2011 yet? Most of the time, I stick with your boring basics but this year’s resolution is something new: I want to get our master bedroom completely finished!

I love to have a peaceful and restful room to relax in at the end of the day. I wish more people would pay attention to their bedrooms instead of leaving it for last or maybe even never! We all need our own special spaces to get a wonderful night’s rest. I have so many ideas and projects I want to do for our room. I hope that they can all be accomplished in 2011!

The first thing we did in our room was paint the walls a dark grey (Gray Area by Behr). Our attached master bath was painted navy (December Eve by Behr). I LOVE the combination. I hope in 2011 we can get the ceilings, baseboards and crown molding painted white.

The second thing we did was get our bedding. I found the black and white version of the Waverly Garden Lattice at a local store but they couldn’t order the navy. Thanks to the world wide web, I found the navy version and my mom made us a duvet and matching shams! The large Euro shams have been used in three bedrooms running. They were first hot pink and lime green for my college apartment, then they were dark brown for our chocolate and light blue bedroom in the last house and now navy for our grey and navy bedroom! Mom just keeps adding fabric and keeping the stuffing ‘fluffed.’ Love them!

Next on the list for our bed is a headboard. I want an over-sized, tufted headboard in a creamy-linen fabric. I don’t want to pay a fortune either so I can’t wait to attempt to make my own! This will once again be a project that when I say “I”, I really mean Conner, my mom, her compressor nail gun and I will be attempting to do this ourselves using this DIY tutorial.

Last year’s attempt to get my great-great-grandparent’s fainting couch from my aunt in Kansas was ruined with a weekend of the flu. Hopefully soon we can get my very first family heirloom into our house to rest at the end of our bed!

The 105-year-old leather is in need of some serious TLC. I would love to recover it in some fun, yellow fabric. I love the look of the fabric above from Fabric.com. I want to try something new, go out on a limb a little, and mix and match several different patterns in our bedroom. I need to order a swatch to see if this one is ‘too much’ up against our bed.

Directly across from the bed is this armoire. Three years ago, we found it at a garage sale for $75! I painted it white, distressed it and it was perfect for our bedroom TV. We switched to AT&T’s U-Verse when we moved so an additional $7/month for a receiver in our bedroom, when we really only watched TV in here for about 30 minutes a day, seemed wasteful. Instead, this now houses our t-shirt collection in the top and shorts and sweatpants in the bottom cabinets.

I want to get out of my comfort zone a little, and away from painted white bedroom furniture, so I am planning on painting the armoire a soft yellow and hopefully painting the inside crevices white, ala a Dorothy Draper chest. I would like to replace the handles as well, but I’m not sure the circle pulls will work for this piece. So I might go with a steel bar pull instead.

Currently, our windows only have the mini-blinds that came with the house. I have been on the hunt from some curtains or fabric for curtains and absolutely love this Dwell Studio fabric! I think it is a perfect pattern to blend with the bedding and the color will look great against the grey walls! I have this over-sized chrome rod in our kitchen and would like to use the same window hardware in this room – I love the sleek and modern design to it.

When you walk into the bedroom, the wall on the left is currently empty. Last week, I purchased a new floor lamp from Target. (I love Christmas gift cards!) It is chrome with acrylic spheres on it. I love the combo of white, chrome and acrylic! I am picturing a very large and over-sized floor mirror behind it.

This one is from Horchow and is gorgeous! The mirrored frame on top of the mirror is so lovely. I can just see it in our room…except for the price. It is $390 plus $150 for shipping and handling. Holy moly!

This one is from West Elm and I love the tiled mirrors on top of the mirror! It is so unique and gorgeous! The price is better ($359 with only $35 for shipping) but still nowhere close to what I want to spend. This means it has great DIY project potential! I made several mirrors with frames in high school so I’m excited to see if I am able to accomplish this one as well.

Right now, we have a very ugly and very brown ceiling fan in our bedroom. It has to go! I want something unique and luxurious instead. This one is from Horchow and is absolutely amazing! I love the tiered look and all of the circle mirrors on it.

Then I started thinking that we might want something shorter so you’re not overwhelmed with lighting when you walk in the room. This one is also from Horchow and is so funky and fun! I like that it would also bring another pattern in the room but not color-specific. I love lighting so this decision will be a fun one to make!

Hopefully we get started on these projects soon! I’ll be sure to post updates as we make progress on the room. Here’s to 2011 and all of our new resolutions!

P.S. I’m linking up to The Nester’s Home Goals party!

Wow! Looks like you'll be busy in the new year. I love those lighting fixtures from Horchow and your fabric choices are so fun and graphic. Can't wait to see the fainting couch reveal.
