This is the chair when I first got it. I paid $35 to a lady selling it on Craigslist. She was asking $50. I probably could have gotten it for lower but I figured that was a low enough bid since I loved the shape but the color and the cushions were not my style.
Once I got the cushions removed, I went to town with the spray paint! I used two coats of Rustoleum’s white primer, two coats of Rustoleum’s Heirloom White and one coat of Rustoleum’s clear gloss finish. The Heirloom White paint only comes in satin and I wanted there to be a little shine to the paint finish.
Here is the back. See how you can still see where the upholstery buttons were? So annoying! Until those eventually work themselves out, I’ll have to always have a pillow in the back of the chair. It is a good and bad thing, I guess. Good because there can be an extra pop of color and I love throw pillows but bad because I would love for this to stand alone without needing some ‘help.’
This is the fabric I chose for the seat cushion. I went with Heirloom White instead of a plain white color because I really liked the way it looked against the fabric and wanted it to stand out from our plain white baseboards that it now sits in front of. The fabric is gorgeous and is from Tonic Living, only $9.95/yard!
Here are the tools needed for the project – my mom’s air compressor staple gun, scissors, cushion, new fabric and a screwdriver to attach the seat back to the chair.
There are a million and one tutorials on how to reupholster a seat cushion so I’ll spare you the details on this one. If you do have questions, feel free to ask in the comments!
Here is how the cushion looked after I attached the fabric. It wasn’t pretty at all and took some effort because of the curve in the cushion. I’ve only done square cushions so it was interesting to say the least. Don’t look too closely at this one – it is pretty bad but works for me!
Here is how the chair looks now! I love it so much! It works really well with the colors in our living room and the light blue adds a nice pop of color.
This didn’t take long at all to do and I’m very happy with the results. The puckers where the old buttons used to be are super annoying but I figure a pillow should be there anyway to make it more comfortable for whoever sits in the chair.
Here is another look at the chair before I started the makeover.
And the after with back pillows! I added my orange pillow (it is football season, after all) and an Oklahoma pillow I purchased from a friend who makes these locally. You can purchase them in any color combination from her Etsy shop here. Isn’t it so cute? I love it!
I love projects like this. When I brought the chair home, Conner was very skeptical but now he loves it just as much as I do! It makes the project even more of a success for me when that happens. 🙂

I absolutely LOVE this project!!! It turned out well. I have a wingback that I’ll have to reupholster since my cat decided she liked it so much…
Beautiful job! I have a suggestion regarding the prior button imprints. You could cover them with new/vintage buttons, beading or even small silk flowers in the original button pattern or create your own. Just a thought 🙂
