Weekend Project

This weekend I am so excited to tackle a project for our second living room (aka Conner’s man room) and have a new room! I know we did this already but I’m not satisfied with how it looks (are we ever?) so I’m making over some furniture and attempting a gallery wall.

I am starting the project using this Chevron stripe as a pattern and stencil. I really, really hope it works because the picture I have in my head looks so good! When the image is clear and right in your head there are only two ways for a project to go – even better than the image or really terrible. Lets hope it is the first and I have a great makeover to show you next week!

Happy first day of spring!! Today is the longest day of the season so we are taking full advantage of it by planting some new roses in the front yard!

Yesterday we worked on cleaning up one of the front beds. The monkey grass was completely out of control so we cut that back and laid some new mulch. I am so excited because the tree that is in it is a Redbud and it is blooming beautifully!

We have tulips coming up (the previous owner planted them, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen this spring!) and the Japanese Maple has little buds all over it, ready to pop open and bloom! I love spring!!

Our double knock-out rose bush on the side of the garage is greening up and I can see some early buds on it as well. I am super excited that the tree on this side is also a Redbud!! The tree behind it is a Magnolia tree and I am just waiting for that one to flower too.

Here is a close-up of the Redbud tree. I’ve never had one before, always seen them on the streets in other people’s yards and business, so this is a huge thrill for me to have several!

The backyard flowers are doing so great. We have tulips and daffodils everywhere as well as plenty of flowers that I don’t know the names of so I just look and admire. It makes me giddy looking at everything we have and discovering springtime at our new place. I am still in awe and amazement that this is all ours!

The fun comes with the bad though…the leaves. We had a crew come last week and take care of all of the leaves that had already fallen. We have one oak tree that hadn’t lost all of its leaves and I guess this weekend was the perfect time for it to drop everything else. We just put new seed down in the grass and laid new mulch in the beds. Oh, great! The joys of yard and gardening fun, right?! Enjoy your first day of spring!

Yes, that’s right…I think my black thumb (http://lauraandconnersteen.blogspot.com/2010/05/black-thumb.html) is maybe turning green! The flowers and plants my mom planted in our front yard and doing pretty good! I’m trying to overlook that they’re not perfect. Obviously I can’t help the over 100 degree temps we’ve had for many weeks running and I am trying my best to combat the slugs that love my hostas! But other than that, I think I’m doing pretty dang good. The rose bush continually has many blooms on it and everything is getting bigger and prettier!

Today, I am still sore and sunburned from working with my mother-in-law for 5 hours in the beds in the backyard! I am so grateful that she took that much time to come help me get the jungle in the backyard tamed down. I was very overwhelmed with how much had become over-grown, how much had started to really brown from the heat and just the simple fact that there are multiple types of flowers in each bed! She was a champ and kept on working in the heat, even when I stopped to make lunch and get a couple of things from Lowe’s.

She worked so hard and taught me what to cut back, what to leave alone and what to watch for later in the year. I am also very excited to finally learn some names of those flowers…now lets see if I can remember any of them! 🙂 We worked on two beds yesterday and next weekend (I’m praying for cooler weather!) I’m going to try and tackle the rest of the beds all by myself. Here’s hoping it still looks good…
